Privacy, disclaimer and licences
This site is made only of static pages. It has no mechanism for collecting information that identifies who is reading it.
About this English version
This English text is machine-translated from the Japanese and has not been checked by the editors. The numbers, photos and sources are the same as the Japanese page. プライバシー・免責・ライセンス is the authoritative version.
What is not collected
There is no advertising and no form to fill in. This site sets no cookies to identify readers, and collects no personal information such as your name or email address.
For traffic counts, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics — cookie-less and non-identifying by design. The destination is detailed in the next section.
The towns you save, the towns you viewed recently, whether you dismissed the language notice, and whether you have already seen the gesture hints in slide mode are kept only on your own device (the browser’s localStorage). Nothing is sent to us, and nothing is shared with your other devices. You can clear it in your browser settings.
Where requests go outside
This site does not serve its own fonts or photos, and uses an outside service for traffic counts too. Opening a page therefore sends requests to the three services below. For fonts and photos, your IP address and similar details reach them.
| Destination | What for |
|---|---|
| fonts.gstatic.com (Google) | Typefaces for the text |
| upload.wikimedia.org (Wikimedia Foundation) | Photos of the towns |
| static.cloudflareinsights.com cloudflareinsights.com (Cloudflare, Inc.) | Counting page views |
Cloudflare Web Analytics uses no cookies and does not identify individuals. We load Cloudflare’s own script for it, placed once in this site’s code (the token in it is a public-facing value). The breakdown of what it sends is in “Disclosure under Japan’s external‑transmission rule” below.
Apart from those three, no third-party scripts or embeds are included. Official social accounts and maps are either plain links or drawn here as figures. Embedding them would pass your details to each company.
This site is served by Cloudflare Workers. Ordinary access logs remain on their servers.
Disclosure under Japan’s external‑transmission rule
Japan’s Telecommunications Business Act requires disclosure of external transmissions of information about users (the “external‑transmission rule”). For the three destinations above, here is who they are, what is sent, and why.
| Business | Information sent | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Google LLC fonts.gstatic.com | IP address, user agent, the URL of the file requested, and the referrer (the page it was requested from) | To display the text in its typeface |
| Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. upload.wikimedia.org | IP address, user agent, the URL of the image requested, and the referrer | To display photos of the towns |
| Cloudflare, Inc. static.cloudflareinsights.com / cloudflareinsights.com | IP address, user agent, the URL of the page viewed, and the referrer | To count page views. Uses no cookies and does not identify individuals |
About the content (disclaimer)
What is published here is based on public primary sources and was checked at the time of publication. Schemes, fees and facilities change. Where a municipality’s official information and this guide disagree, the official information takes precedence. For anything you act on — a procedure, or a decision to move — please confirm it against the municipality’s own information.
If you find an error, please tell us through About this guide. We will check and fix it.
Photo licences
The photos come from Wikimedia Commons. Licences differ from photo to photo (CC BY, CC BY-SA, public domain, CC0 and others). The site as a whole cannot be treated under a single licence.
The foot of each page gives the photographer, the licence and a link to the original page for every photo. If you intend to reuse one, please check there.
The text and figures on this site
The text, the figures and the design were made by the operator. If you want to reproduce more than a quotation, please get in touch through the contact details on About this guide.
However, if you are the municipality of the town a page describes, or a school or community group there, you may use it to introduce your town without asking — just credit “Machigatari” and give the page’s URL.
Figures such as population and area come from public statistics such as e-Stat, and anyone may use them under the terms of each source.
