Completed in 1762 (Horeki 12) as the intake gate from the Onga River, the karato (sluice gate) regulated the water by the number of long, thin planks set into its groove. The Horikawa canal was begun in 1621 (Genna 7) on the order of Kuroda Nagamasa, but work stopped with his death. Beside the Karato Community Hall stand two camphor trees designated city natural monuments.

Around Rakan-yama in Habu Park, about 50 burial caves of the late Kofun period (second half of the 6th century) are scattered; they seem to have been made over some 200 years. The stone Buddhas inside are thought to have been enshrined in later ages, and the caves seem to remain a place of local worship. Excavation showed that the hill was deliberately built up with earth.
