The munafuda (棟札, ridgepole tablet) of Ukemochi Shrine (保食神社), enshrined within Yatsurugi Shrine (八劔神社) in Tateyashiki, records: “Mizumaki is a place name, meaning water that curls.” At the start of the village system in 1889 (Meiji 22), the headman's office on Mizumaki-yama (水巻山) became the village office, and the village took the name of where it stood. The town emblem is a figure of Onga River water whirling in a triple comma.
