Night ferries set out aiming for the lightof a lamp stand on the embankment.

In the grounds of Suijin Shrine in Higashi-Oyabu stands a lamp stand carved "Daijingu, safety for the village, Ansei Heishin (3), ninth month, same day." It originally stood on the embankment and was moved to its present site when the Nagara River was improved. Villagers called it the Kurofune lamp stand, and have held the Otomyo festival on 17 September each year.

  • Inscribed Ansei 3 (1856), ninth month
  • Originally on the Higashi-Oyabu embankment
  • Otomyo festival, 17 September each year

02 / Umayokeba

A horse is said to have been lifted aside here:two 2 m squares by the road.

In the Edo period the Tara Road was only about four shaku wide. Two 2-meter-square plots on the south side of the road between Niremata Shinden and Nakago are Kanne's Umayokeba. By legend, the strong man Kanne lifted his horse by its four legs to get out of the way of a water magistrate's procession, and was granted horse-yielding places. The site is a town-designated historic site.

03 / Fukuzuka Castle site

The castle site lost every trace in the three-river works;it seems to have stood in the middle of the river.

An old chronicle of Mino Province records that Fukuzuka Castle was built in Oei 21 (1414) and controlled river transport to southern Ise. The castle site lost every trace in the Kiso-Nagara-Ibi three-river separation works, and its location seems to have been around the middle of the Ibi River, on the line between a ferry landing and the end of an embankment. It is a town-designated historic site.

  • Built Oei 21 (1414), per the chronicle
  • Lost in the three-river separation works
  • Town-designated historic site (1957)

Wanouchi Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Oyabu Araizeki is the site of a stone overflow weir on the Ogure River, which once drew water from the Nagara River and flowed into the Ibi River, and is a Gifu Prefecture historic site. The weir completed in Horeki 5 (1755) broke in a flood the same year; the one completed in Horeki 8 (1758) controlled the water until a closing embankment was finished in 1899, and its completion made the river channel disappear. A 1997 survey confirmed that traces of the weir remain underground, and a monument stands there
  2. 02The Oyabu ferry lantern is a lamp stand dated the ninth month of Ansei 3 (1856) in the grounds of Suijin Shrine in Higashi-Oyabu, and the town board of education records that Nagara River ferries aimed for its light at night. Kanne's Umayokeba and the Fukuzuka Castle site were both designated town historic sites in 1957
  3. 03The town's name, Wanouchi, comes from the term for the area inside a ring of embankments around a village (a waju, or polder), which was read as "wa no uchi", inside the ring; the town was formed in 1954 by merging the three villages of Fukuzuka, Oyabu and Niki. Its area is 22.33 km², and there is no railway station in the town
