The city says rapeseed fields are planted in a different field each year to avoid problems from continuous cropping. Takikawa's rapeseed is grown mainly as a crop for oil, not for viewing, and the city says its planted area is among the largest in Japan. They bloom from mid to late May.

Until it merged with Takikawa in 1971, Ebeotsu was its own town in Sorachi District, forming one living area. The city describes the west as farmland on the fertile soil of the Ishikari River and the east as hills typified by a highland where a lookout gives a view of a sea of clouds.

Takikawa City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The city describes the Takikawa sea cow as an animal that lived about 5 million years ago, when Takikawa was under the sea. The fossil was found in 1980 in the bed of the Sorachi River and designated a Hokkaido Natural Monument in 1984. The city estimates it was about 8 m long. The Museum of Art and Natural History also has an art section
  2. 02A city-designated cultural property is a building moved from the former Imperial Forestry Bureau Takikawa office, and its rapeseed fields are planted in a different field every year. The city introduces Takikawa as an inland city between the Ishikari and Sorachi rivers
  3. 03The city says the name Takikawa is a free translation of the Ainu "Sorapuchi," meaning "where the falls come down," and also explains it by a waterfall-like step in the middle of the Sorachi River. It gives the snowfall as about 7 m
