01 / Sueyoshi Shrine Boulder

A boulder that may have fallen from the cliffseems to sit on a pedestal.

The huge coral boulder on the approach to Sueyoshi Shrine in Aden, according to town materials, is far older than the rock beneath it and may have fallen from the 200 m cliff behind. It seems to sit on a base because only the rock under it was left unmelted. It is an object of faith for safe childbirth and children's growth.

02 / Araki Coast Plant Communities

From wave-sprayed rock to the plateau, bands of vegetation can be seen.

On the Araki coast, communities of dwarf shrubs such as Osteomeles spread from the wave-sprayed zone up to about 5 m above sea level, with shrub woodland above and trees near the plateau. The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that the banded distribution is well seen; it became a national Natural Monument in 2014. The town enacted a nature conservation ordinance in 1973, the earliest in the prefecture.

At Karimata Spring in Onotsu, legend says that Minamoto no Tametomo, on his way to the Ryukyus, shot a karimata arrow from off Kikai Island, landed and pulled it out, and clear water welled up from the mark. The Ministry of the Environment's list of springs records that the legend is handed down.
