Going along National Route 1 from Chayamachi toward Shimomachiya, Mount Fuji appears on the left side of the road from Toriido Bridge. The city introduces it as the setting of a picture by the Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Ando Hiroshige. A monument was erected in 1994.

The Fujima family of Yanagishima served as village headmen through the Edo period and traded as shipping wholesalers with Yanagishima Port as their base. They owned ships such as the Kannon Maru and Fudo Maru. The 13th head, Ryuan, was born here and recorded the late-Edo social scene in detail.

03 / Fishing

A postcard-sized wooden frameevens out the raw shirasu.

Shirasu fishing is the busiest in Chigasaki, and the catch is also made into tatami-iwashi. In cold water, raw shirasu are put into a postcard-sized wooden frame in an even layer, the water is lightly drained, the frame is flipped onto a reed screen, and the sheet is dried in the sun.
