01 / Kinoe Station Waiting Room

Kinoe Station (木上駅) on the Kuma River Railway (くま川鉄道) is an unstaffed station that opened in 1953 (Showa 28). Its one-story steel waiting room has a frontage of 5.0m and a building area of 14 m². The town's booklet describes the waiting room and platform as facilities from the opening. In 2014 they were registered as a nationally registered tangible cultural property.

02 / Kamezuka Kofun Group

Three keyhole-shaped tombs,about 45 to 50m long, remain.

Tomb No. 1 is a prefecturally designated historic site and Tomb No. 2 a town-designated one. The town's booklet calls them the only keyhole-shaped tombs in Kuma District (球磨郡), and a Kumamoto University Faculty of Letters leaflet describes them as the southernmost in Kumamoto Prefecture. Because details of the excavated items are unknown, the date of construction is not clear.

03 / Marume Kurandonosuke

The swordsman who founded Taisha-ryucleared mountain land in Ichibu in his later years.

A fencing instructor to the Sagara domain, he was born in Yatsushiro in 1540 and died in 1629. In his later years he lived in retirement in Ichibu Village (一武村), where, the town says, he cleared more than seven cho (七町歩) of mountain land and fields with the villagers. The fields, waterways and planted forest are still in use, and his grave and relics are town-designated cultural properties.

Higo-Nishinomura (肥後西村), Ichibu (一武) and Kinoe (木上) stations on the Kuma River Railway's Yunomae Line are in town, and all three are unstaffed. Higo-Nishinomura Station is a three-minute walk from Kumamoto Prefectural Kuma Chuo High School (県立球磨中央高校). The town office is in Ichibu.

  1. 01Shinguji Temple (新宮寺), No. 32 on the Sagara 33 Kannon pilgrimage, holds six town-designated Kannon statues. The town's booklet records that different sculptors carved them between 1577 (Tensho 5) and 1630 (Kan'ei 7), a span of 53 years.
  2. 02The waiting room at Kinoe Station is a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The town's booklet calls the Kamezuka Kofun Group the only keyhole-shaped tombs in Kuma District. Marume Kurandonosuke (丸目蔵人佐), founder of Taisha-ryu, spent his later years in Ichibu.
  3. 03Kinoe has two graves whose posthumous names are inscribed with characters meaning 'ever drunk at feasts' and 'drunk on sake, always happy' (酒宴常酔・酒酔常楽), counted among the Japan Heritage cultural properties. The town's booklet describes the Kinoe Canal (木上溝) as an irrigation channel about 8km long. The Kuwahara Residence (桑原家住宅) in Ichibu is a kagiya-style (鉤屋) farmhouse and an Important Cultural Property.
