A single cycad, about 11 m around its roots, stands in a garden. Its spirit is said to have woven silk in a girl's form.

Along about 250 m of a cliff face of Aso welded tuff on the right bank of the Hanegi River, cave tombs (横穴墓) were cut in the later Kofun period. Some have a red circle motif painted on the frame at the entrance, and some have a house-shaped relief or a sword relief inside. In 1921 the group was designated a National Historic Site together with the Ishinuki Anakannon cave tombs.

Tamana City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The middle of Suya Bridge in Takase Urakawa is dipped, with the two sides slightly higher, so that people carrying loads can brace their feet. Kozaki Bridge has a groove cut on one side only, so that carts do not slip off.
  2. 02The Kumamoto domain's warehouses for rice tribute to be sent to Osaka stood at Takase, Kawashiri and Yatsushiro; of the maximum 400,000 bales shipped to Osaka's Dojima in the Bunka era, 200,000 came from Takase. Three cultural properties including the Takase landing site were designated the National Historic Site “Kumamoto Domain Takase Rice Granary Site” in 2022.
  3. 03The Former Tamana Reclamation Facilities have stone walls 3 to 6 m high and 5.2 km long, built in the mid-Meiji period; four embankments and three sluice gates are Important Cultural Properties. In Ikura (伊倉) stands the grave of Shiikan Kakukō (四位官郭公), a man from Fujian, China, who held a shuinjō (red-seal permit) in the early Edo period; it is called “Shiikan-san's grave.”

If something caught your eye, ask the town itself.
