It has long been called the Tonomiya, the "distant shrine", and is recorded in the Engishiki as the "Okami Tonomiya"; it is also said to be a Moto-Ise (former Ise). Takihara-no-miya and Takihara-no-narabi-no-miya stand side by side, and the precinct has an approach lined with cedars hundreds of years old and an ablution place that uses the flow of valley water.

After the festival at Mitonokami Shrine, purified ayu are thrown toward a rock cave called Ohachi in Otaki Gorge, and whether they go in is used to foretell the year's fortune. Its origin is also said to go back to the 4th century, the reign of Emperor Chuai.
