At the foot of Mt Aoba, Magoji (馬居寺) and Nakayamadera (中山寺) both enshrine as their main image a Batō Kannon, the Kannon who wears a horse's head on top of his own. The two statues, one from the late Heian period and one from the Kamakura period, are both Important Cultural Properties. Batō Kannon is seldom worshipped on his own, but the prefecture notes that many remain around Mt Aoba. Both are hidden images: Magoji shows its statue once every 24 years, Nakayamadera once every 33.

The two ginkgo trees at Sugimori Shrine (杉森神社) in Rokurodani are both female and about 32 m tall. They are ohatsuki ginkgo (オハツキイチョウ), trees whose nuts can form on the edges of the leaves, which the prefecture describes as well known as evidence that flowers evolved from leaves. They were designated a Natural Monument in 1935.

03 / Wakasa fugu

Tiger puffer caught in set netswere raised in a wire-mesh pen.

Farming of Wakasa fugu (若狭ふぐ) is said to have begun in 1954, when fishermen in Takahama kept tiger puffer that had swum into their set nets in early spring, raising them in a pen made by closing off part of the sea with wire mesh. In 1983 a trial of raising young fish to full size began in the town's Uchiura Bay, and puffer farming spread across the whole of Wakasa Bay.
