01 / Honjo Kofun Cluster

In 1871, a shrine officiantmade the Honjo Kofun Map.

The Honjo Kofun Cluster overlaps the town's central urban area; the town's management plan calls it "an extremely rare situation across Japan, with kofun lying within an urban area." In 1871, an officiant of Kentsuka Inari Shrine (宮永真琴) made the Honjo Kofun Map, and in 1874 he wrote an illustrated account too.

02 / Ceiling painting dedicated by Ito Sukeharu

On the back of a ceiling board,a prayer text names a boy (虎千代麿).

This cypress ceiling board, 264cm square, is kept at Hokedake Yakushiji (法華嶽薬師寺). A dragon among clouds is painted inside a circle on the front. An ink inscription on the back says Ito Sukeharu dedicated it in 1575 (Tensho 3) praying for martial fortune and his family's health. The name (虎千代麿) in it is said to be the childhood name of his son, Ito Mancio.

03 / Manpukuji

Ink inside the Amida statue's bellygives its making as Kanki 4 (1232).

This is the principal image of Manpukuji (万福寺), an old Tendai temple. An ink inscription inside the belly shows the master sculptor-monk (聖賢) made it in 1232 (Kanki 4). The central figure is 78.8cm tall and the two attendants 99.1cm. All three date from the Kamakura period and are Important Cultural Properties.

There is no railway station in town; from Miyazaki Station it is 42 minutes by Miyazaki Kotsu route bus to Kunitomi. The town covers 130.63 km², and the town's official site calls it a farming and mountain village. Honjo, its center, was made a shogunate territory in Shoho 2 (1645) in the Edo period and stayed so until the Meiji Restoration.

  1. 01Muikamachi Yoimaka is a drum float in the summer festival of Honjo Inari Shrine. Young men in white happi coats lift a scaffold with four boys tied to it and parade through Muikamachi to meet the shrine's mikoshi. It is a town-designated intangible cultural property (folk performing art).
  2. 02The Honjo Kofun Cluster (a National Historic Site) has 57 mounds designated, including 17 keyhole-shaped and 37 round, and overlaps the town's central urban area. In 1871, an officiant of Kentsuka Inari Shrine (宮永真琴) made the Honjo Kofun Map.
