01 / Netsuka Site

From a small hill in the rice paddiescame an iron sword with a spiral ornament.

Netsuka Site lies on a small hill in the middle of rice paddies, and a small-scale excavation in 1996 turned up an iron sword of the late Yayoi period. Of the three swords, Sword No. 2 has a spiral motif on its hilt and is 74 cm long. The village board of education records that component analysis showed all three to be iron from Gaya, in the south of the Korean Peninsula.

  • Sword No. 2: 74 cm long
  • Prefectural Historic Site, March 2005
  • 362 finds designated prefectural treasures

02 / Ichikawa Chikuzen-no-kami

"Ichikawa Chikuzen-no-kami" is not one real person, the village records, but a name combining a father and son.

The village states that "Ichikawa Chikuzen-no-kami" was not a real individual but a figure combining two generations, a father and son of the Ichikawa family who ruled Kijimadaira. At the temple, two grave markers stand side by side, one a hokyointo pagoda type and one a slab type; the first is said to be the father's and the second the son's. It is not confirmed that either man ever bore the title Chikuzen-no-kami.

  • Two grave markers at the temple
  • Village-designated No. 33 (1987)

The north wetland (Kita-Dobu) of Kayanodaira Plateau lies at 1,500 m and covers 7 ha. The village's own site calls it a first-class raised bog in the prefecture, where the sphagnum moss aomori-mizugoke is the most common. The south wetland (Minami-Dobu) lies at 1,420 m, covers about 0.5 ha, and has plenty of mizubasho (Asian skunk cabbage). Both are village-designated natural monuments.
