Test digs in 2011 for a housing development confirmed several tombs, and development on the northern part of the hill was frozen. According to the town's excavation report, the group was designated a national Historic Site on 7 October 2015, and the town bought the hill area. Tomb 3 is a square mound about 15 m on a side; a Chinese-made mirror with gods and beasts (a gabuntai kanjonyu shinjukyo) came from its wooden coffin.

02 / Bronze bell

A bronze bell said to be cast in the same mouldas one from Kamo-Iwakura, Shimane.

Said to have come from Kannonyama in Kanmaki Village in the early Bunka era (from 1804), this is a small kesadasuki-mon bronze bell, about 29.3 cm tall. It is now held by a shrine in Shizuoka and shown at the Toro Museum. The town explains that it matches bell no. 17 from the Kamo-Iwakura site in size and pattern and was cast later from the same mould, and it shows a replica in the town.

  • About 29.3 cm tall
  • Shizuoka Prefecture designation, 7 January 1956
  • Same mould as Kamo-Iwakura bell no. 17 (the town's explanation)

Kanmaki Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Pegasus monument in front of the town office was made on 8 June 1991; the black sphere stands for the star Alpha and holds a time capsule. It was due to be opened in 2041, but in view of social change such as population decline and an ageing society, the town opened it on 23 October 2022, in the 50th year of town status
  2. 02The town infers that the name Kanmaki comes from gently rolling hills suited to grazing, with an upper and a lower pasture. At the Shimomaki tile kiln, a prefectural emergency survey in January 1960 confirmed one climbing kiln of about the Nara period
  3. 03The Kanmaki Kudo Kofun Group is the town's first national Historic Site, and the finds from Tomb 3 became a Nara Prefecture designated cultural property on 27 March 2015. The town writes that sasayuri lilies, the town flower, once grew in great numbers in the town's hills
