In the town's list of cultural properties, the Shimotabaru Castle Site is a national historic site (designated 2003) and the Shimotabaru Shell Mound is an Okinawa Prefecture historic site (designated 1956). Both are located in the Hateruma district of Hateruma Island. In the Agency for Cultural Affairs database, the castle site is designated under the category of sites relating to politics.

02 / Nagomi Tower

A concrete lookout tower standson a mound built up with stone walls.

It stands in Akayama Park, near the center of Taketomi Island's western settlement. On a 6 m mound built up with stone walls and the like, a lookout tower of reinforced concrete was added. The lookout platform has an 8-step staircase, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the tower a symbol of the island.

03 / Funaura Nipa Palm Grove

Native to the Philippines, absent from Taiwan,a palm grove grows wild on Iriomote.

It lies in the northwest of Funaura on Iriomote Island and is a national Natural Monument, designated in 1972. The Agency for Cultural Affairs explains that the nipa palm is native to the Philippines and does not occur in Taiwan, but grows wild on Iriomote Island at its northern limit, which makes it notable for plant distribution. The land is national forest.

The gateway is the Port of Taketomi on Taketomi Island, about 10 to 15 minutes by boat from the island ferry terminal at Ishigaki Port.
