In 1819 two local men, Yoshikawa Yoshizumi (吉川温恭) and Murano Morimasa (村野盛政), became the first north of the Kantō region to mass-produce steamed sencha, and began trading with Edo tea wholesalers such as Yamamotoyama. The Kasanete Hiraku Chajō no Hi (重闢茶場碑), set up at Izumoiwai Shrine (出雲祝神社) in 1832, records the revival of tea-making after centuries of decline. The name "Sayama tea" comes from this place.

Ishikawa-gumi Seishi (石川組製糸) was a silk-reeling company that Ishikawa Ikutarō of Kurosu started in 1893 with 20 reeling basins; at its peak it ranked sixth in Japan for raw-silk shipments. In 1921 the company raised the frame of its Western-style guest house to receive American trading partners. Faced with brick-look tiles, the house is actually built of wood, and is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Kaji Hills (加治丘陵) jut out from the Oku-Musashi mountains. Because they stay linked to the mountains, plants and animals usually found only deep in the forest live right beside the town. The Sakurayama Observatory (桜山展望台), at 189 m above sea level, was built in 1987 for the city's 20th anniversary, with views of Mt. Fuji, Mt. Tsukuba and the tea fields below.
