The basins of the Iruma, Koma and Oppe rivers are known as the Nishikawa forestry district, where cedar and cypress grow. In the Edo period the timber was lashed into rafts and floated downriver to Edo. As "timber from the river west of Edo", it became Nishikawa-zai (西川材). Hannō Kawara (飯能河原), a riverbank on the Iruma, was a base for the rafts. In 2009 the name was registered as a regional brand trademark.

This hill at the northwest edge of town was first called Atago-yama, and after statues of arhats were enshrined it was also known as Rakan-yama. In 1883 the Meiji Emperor climbed it to observe large Imperial Guard manoeuvres held in Hannō, and it has been Tenranzan (天覧山, "the hill the emperor viewed from") ever since. It was Saitama's first designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and on clear days you can see the high-rises of Tokyo.

The former village of Naguri, which merged with the city in 2005, holds Lake Naguri (名栗湖), formed by damming the Arima River. Arima Dam was the prefecture's first multipurpose dam, completed in March 1986 and 83.5 m high. At the canoe workshop on the shore you can build your own canoe from local Nishikawa timber and paddle it on the lake.
