01 ／ Festival
The Chichibu Night Festival: the eve on 2 December, the main day on the 3rd. Floats weighing up to 20 tonnes are hauled up the steep Dango slope while star mines burst in the freezing sky. The festival grew with the silk market held at Chichibu Shrine in the mid-Edo period.
02 ／ Mountain
Mount Buko (武甲山), stepped by limestone quarrying. The city built a museum to record “its changing shape” — that is how much this mountain is Chichibu itself. An industrial mountain, and still directly ahead from anywhere in town.
03 ／ Flowers
The moss phlox hill in Hitsujiyama Park, at the foot of Mount Buko. Ten varieties and more than 400,000 plants divide some 17,600 square metres of slope into colour. With Mount Buko standing behind it, no other flower field has this scale.
