The itoyo (イトヨ, three-spined stickleback) grows up in the sea and swims upriver to spawn, but the fish of Hongan Shōzu (本願清水) never go down to the sea. From around May into autumn, the males build nests on the pond bottom and guard the young. They need spring water that stays below 20°C even in summer, and the city calls this the southern limit of the landlocked form. The pond is said to have been dug by Kanamori Nagachika (金森長近) as the castle town's water source.

02 / Ōno-maru

A domain in a basin built a sailing shipand wintered in Sakhalin.

In 1855 the Ōno Domain decided to settle Ezo, and in 1858 it completed a Western-style sailing ship, the Ōno-maru (大野丸). The next year, sailing from its home port of Tsuruga, it carried settlers to Kita-Ezo (北蝦夷地, Sakhalin), where they began wintering at Ushoro (鵜城). In 1860 the shogunate made part of the land a quasi-domain of Ōno. The ship sank off Nemuro in 1864, and in 1869 the land was handed back to the new government.

Hōkyō-ji (宝慶寺) was founded by Jakuen (寂円), a monk who came from Song China out of devotion to Dōgen, and is regarded as the second training temple of the Sōtō school after Eihei-ji. The portrait of Rujing (如浄), Dōgen's teacher in China, the portrait of the Tang Zen monk Yunju Daoying (雲居道膺) and a Shaka triad are said to have been brought by Jakuen; all three are prefectural cultural properties. Jakuen's disciple Giun (義雲) became the temple's second abbot and then the fifth abbot of Eihei-ji.

Living here

In the town centre, many homes draw groundwater from wells.

  • about 30,000 people

There are about 8,000 wells in the city, and almost all household water comes from groundwater. To ease the fall in the water table in winter, since fiscal 1978 the city has rented rice paddies and flooded them every year from October to February. The railway is the JR Etsumi-Hoku Line, centred on Echizen-Ōno Station. Ōno absorbed Izumi village in 2005 and is the largest municipality by area in the prefecture.
