Jakkō, who led the district,is still enshrined here.
In 716, in the Nara period, 1,799 people of Goguryeo descent living in seven provinces, among them Suruga, Kai and Sagami, were moved here to form Koma District (高麗郡). Koma no Konikishi Jakkō (高麗王若光), held to be its head, is enshrined at Koma Shrine (高麗神社), whose chief priests are still his descendants. At nearby Shōden-in (聖天院) stands a stone tower said to be his grave. The district's name lasted until 1896.
