Taito Ward notes that in primeval times an island is thought to have stood near Matsuchiyama and Torigoe. Matsuchiyama was once part of the plateau running from Hongo; the sea wore the rest away and left only the hill. At about 9.8 m, it is a rare natural rise in the low-lying shitamachi.
