In the former town of Fukuoka (福岡町), sedge for hats has been grown in paddies; men bend bamboo into cone-shaped frames (笠骨) and women sew the sedge onto them (笠縫い). A record shows 2.1 million hats shipped in 1864. The craft became an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2009, and Etchū Fukuoka no Sugegasa (越中福岡の菅笠) a national Traditional Craft in 2017.

Zuiryū-ji (瑞龍寺) was laid out by Maeda Toshitsune, third lord of the Kaga domain, to pray for Maeda Toshinaga, who founded Takaoka. Its gate, Buddha hall and lecture hall stand in a straight line, and became National Treasures in 1997. The Buddha hall is roofed with lead tiles weighing 47 tonnes in all; the temple says they could make 2.5 million matchlock bullets. The Hatchōmichi (八丁道) path runs from its gate to Toshinaga's tomb.

In 1877 Fujii Nōzō (藤井能三), a shipping merchant of Fushiki (伏木), built a Western-style lighthouse at his own expense, and in 1883 he opened a private weather station in one of its rooms. In 1885, still private, it was allowed to issue storm warnings. It passed to the prefecture in 1887. Its 1909 building, whose tower was restored in 2017, is now the city's Fushiki Weather Station Museum (伏木気象資料館).
