01 / Southern ship

In 1408, a ship from the southbrought a black elephant.

In the sixth month of 1408, a nanban (南蛮) ship from the southern seas reached Obama. Among the gifts it carried for the shogun were a black elephant, two pairs of peacocks and two pairs of parrots. In the eleventh month a gale drove the ship onto the beach and wrecked it, and it sailed home the next year in a newly built vessel. The Fukui prefectural history takes it to have been sent from Palembang on Sumatra. At Kogasaki (甲ヶ崎) there is a rock where the elephant is said to have been tied.

Every March 2, water drawn from the aka well of Jingu-ji (神宮寺) is carried by a torchlit procession about 2 km to Unose (鵜の瀬) on the Onyu River (遠敷川) and poured into the stream. It is said to take ten days to reach the Wakasa well at Nigatsu-do of Todai-ji in Nara, where it is drawn up at the Omizutori on March 12. In Wakasa, people say spring comes once the Omizu-okuri (お水送り) is over. Jingu-ji's main hall is an Important Cultural Property.

Wakasa-nuri (若狭塗) lacquerware is said to have begun when Matsuura Sanjuro, lacquerer to the Obama domain in the early Edo period, turned the look of the seabed into a pattern. For chopsticks, patterns are laid with abalone shell, eggshell and pine needles, coloured lacquer is applied a dozen or more times, and then the surface is ground with a whetstone to bring the pattern out. Since the pressure changes the pattern, no two pairs are alike. A chopstick festival, Hashi Matsuri (箸まつり), is held on August 4.

Obama was part of a miketsukuni (御食国), a province that sent salt and seafood to the capital in ancient times, and at the Okozu Salt-Making Site (岡津製塩遺跡) in Kato, nine salt-boiling hearths of the 7th and 8th centuries remain. In 2001 the city passed Japan's first ordinance on the theme of food. Every child in the final year of nursery school or kindergarten in the city takes part in Kids Kitchen, a cooking class begun in 2003. The city's gateway is Obama Station on the JR Obama Line.
