In 1856 Hiroshige painted the villages of Horie and Nekozane, on either side of a river, for his Famous Places of Edo (Tokyo National Museum). The name Nekozane is said to come from pines planted on a bank in the Kamakura period, in the hope that waves would not top their roots.
