Of the red pine avenue along the old Sapporo Honto road, the roughly 2 km from Onakayama to Naruka in Nanae Town is the best-preserved stretch. Before winter, coarsely woven straw mats (komo) are wrapped around the trunks, and in spring they are removed with the pests that overwintered in them and burned.
