Arayu, the source of Yumura Onsen, runs at 98 degrees, which the town calls the hottest spring in Japan. It rises on the riverbed at the bottom of the valley, where the Yumura fault crosses the valley line. People steam vegetables and boil eggs in it, and a skin lotion has been developed from it. Kato Buntaro was born in Hamasaka in 1905. From about 1928 he climbed alone again and again: Yatsugatake, Yarigatake, Tateyama and Hotakadake under snow. His solo winter ascent of Yarigatake astonished the newspapers and the climbers of the day. In 1936, caught in a blizzard on the Kitakama ridge, he died at 31.
