A bird that died out hereis over the rice fields again.
Japan’s wild oriental storks went extinct in 1971, when the last one died in Toyooka. The city brought back low-pesticide paddies and released birds on a trial basis in 2005. In 2007 a chick fledged in the wild for the first time in 43 years, and storks are now an ordinary sight overhead.
