In 1580 a senior retainer of Hosokawa Fujitaka laid out a castle town along today's street from his base at Yasura Castle. The castle was dismantled after three years, but its street plan became the base of Chirimen Kaido, the "crepe road". The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the district as keeping "the street plan typical of a castle town, with the road bending like a crank."
