In the Edo period, a whale that entered Ine Bay was driven into an inlet after nets were strung across the bay mouth, centred on Aoshima. The whaling record was kept in Kameshima village from 1656 until the second year of the Taisho era (1913). Aoshima is two islands, and it keeps an Ebisu shrine said to date from 1619 and whale graves. Cutting trees on the islands has long been forbidden.

02 / Boat floats

Of the four boat floats, one is saidto have been paid for by a great whale.

The Ine Festival is held on the last weekend of July each year. In a major festival year, the boat floats and a procession on the sea take part. There are four floats, and one is said to have been built in 1761 with the proceeds of a great whale caught in Ine Bay, worth 7 kan 500 monme of silver. The four districts of Takanashi, Tateishi, Nibi and Kameyama each own one.

03 / Picture scroll

The legend of Urashima was paintedas the shrine's origin story.

Ura Shrine holds the painted handscroll Urashima Myojin Engi: one scroll from the first half of the Muromachi period, designated an Important Cultural Property in 1971. Its subject is the legend of Urashima, but scenes of the shrine's founding and its festival follow the tale, which shows it was painted as the shrine's origin story. It has no captions.
