Takeda Castle is said to have begun around 1443, when Yamana Sozen, military governor of Tajima, had his retainer the Otagaki family build it. Seven generations of Otagaki held it, then Hashiba Hidenaga, Kuwayama Shigeharu and Akamatsu Hirohide. In 1600 Hirohide took his own life and the castle was abandoned. It became a national historic site in 1943.

The Ikuno silver mine is said to have opened in 807, though no record survives to fix the date. Serious digging began in 1542, and the mine passed from Oda to Toyotomi to Tokugawa. In 1868 it became a mine held directly by the government, in 1896 it was sold to Mitsubishi, and in 1973 it closed.

In 1919 a large ore-dressing plant was built at Mikobata. Ore carried from the Akenobe mine, six kilometres away across the mountains, was separated here into zinc, copper and tin by weight and by flotation. At its height the plant had the largest output in East Asia.
