Miwakare (水分れ) at Iso stands 95 metres above sea level, the lowest central divide on Honshu. Water parting here runs one way into the Kakogawa and the Seto Inland Sea, and the other into the Yura River and the Sea of Japan.

The Sasayama Group at the southern end of the city is early Cretaceous rock, something over 100 million years old. In August 2006 two local geology enthusiasts found dinosaur fossils there, named the Tamba Dragon (丹波竜). Excavation by the prefectural Museum of Nature and Human Activities continues.

03 / Great zelkova

One root grewinto a 10 m bridge.

The great zelkova of Kaibara is reckoned about 1,000 years old, 6.4 metres across the trunk and 21 metres tall. One root thickened, crossed the Okumura river below and went into the far bank, making a natural bridge 10 metres long. It became a prefectural natural monument in 1970.

Take the JR Fukuchiyama Line to Kaibara or Iso Station, then a local bus to city hall; limited express trains stop only at Kaibara. The city covers 493.21 square kilometres, and from autumn into winter the Tamba mist settles over the hills at morning and evening.
