Sasayama Castle was raised on the hill of Sasayama in 1609 at the order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, with feudal lords conscripted for the work. Todo Takatora laid out the plan and Ikeda Terumasa ran the construction. Stone walls, moats and two of the three barbicans survive, and it became a national historic site in 1956.
