When the Hokusetsu Sanda New Town began, people moved in fast enough that from 1987 to 1996 Sanda had the highest rate of population growth in Japan, ten years in a row. The city counted 105,949 people on 31 March 2025, on 210.32 square kilometres, the 14th largest area among the prefecture's 41 municipalities.

02 / Kawamoto Komin

Kawamoto Komin (川本幸民, 1810-1871) was the third son of a physician to the Sanda domain and is called the father of modern chemistry in Japan. His Kagaku Shinsho of 1853 gives a recipe for beer, which he is said to have brewed successfully. He also made matches and a camera, and late in life opened a school in Sanda.

The Kuki family served as chief retainers of the Sanda domain, and the fifteenth head, Kuki Takanori, designed this house himself in the early Meiji years. The ground floor is Japanese, with lattice and paper doors; the upper floor has plastered round columns and an arched veranda. It became a prefectural cultural property in 1998.

Sanda Station to JR Osaka Station is about 45 minutes. From Kobe-Sannomiya it is the city subway to Tanigami and then the Kobe Electric Railway, about an hour. City hall is ten minutes' walk west of Sanda Station. Tamba Sasayama lies to the north and Kobe to the south.
