01 / Burial mound
Found by chance during construction in 1934,what lay in the coffin was reburied as it was.
It was found while a Kyoto University seismological observation facility was being built, and it has no earthen mound. In a coffin of hemp cloth hardened with lacquer lay a man of about 60, on a pillow of glass beads and wrapped in brocade; X-ray photographs also show a cap embroidered with gold thread. The cap and pillow have been reconstructed. The leading theory is that Nakatomi (Fujiwara) no Kamatari was buried here.
