01 / Holiday

Respect for the Aged Daystarted in this village.

In April 1947 Kadowaki Masao, 35, became headman of Nomadani village and held a village gathering for everyone aged 55 and over. The first was on 15 September: mild weather, a slack season for farming, and the old tale of the waterfall of youth. The next year the village made that date its own holiday, and in 1966 it became a national one.

Sugihara paper (杉原紙), from the Sugihara valley, appears in documents from at least the late Heian period. In medieval times it went up to the imperial court as a gift from Harima and was spoken of as the finest paper in Japan. It is still made by hand here, and the town is working toward having it registered as cultural property.

Yamada Nishiki, the sake rice born in 1936, has Yamada-ho for its mother, and the likeliest account has it found by Yamada Seizaburo of Higashi-Yasuda. That is why the town calls itself the birthplace of Yamada Nishiki. On 5 March 2006 it became the first municipality to declare itself a town that toasts with sake.
