The gazetteer describes Ushibori as a landing where ships lay waiting for wind. A document in the Suda family papers shows a canal 6 ken wide and 630 ken long, from the Kita-Tone River to Narutsuhama in Nagayama; use was paid and decided by bidding. Hokusai's Ushibori is said to be painted from the bank before Mikumano Shrine.

03 / Sumo and water-god rite

A 1672 ruling on the landwas marked with an offering of sumo.

In 1672 the shogunate's tribunal ruled that the Tokushima area belonged to the southern Mito domain, and the next year villagers offered a sumo festival at Kashima Yoshida Shrine. That began Nobukata Sumo. The city says the Tokushima Water-God Festival also dates back to that ruling.
