Karatoyama Shinji Zumo (唐戸山神事相撲) is said to have begun in reverence of Iwatsukuwake no Mikoto (磐衝別命), the sumo-loving deity enshrined at Hakui Shrine (羽咋神社). Fought without water or salt, and without a single pause, it also launches careers: its winning ozeki is given the title "oyakata." Since 2025 the date has moved to the autumn equinox, and in 2026 it is scheduled for September 23.

Behind Hakui Shrine lie the Seven Mounds of Hakui (羽咋七塚), including Ōtsuka (大塚), said to be the grave of the deity Iwatsukuwake no Mikoto. Legend says a bird with poisonous feathers once tormented the people here, until the god and his three dogs defeated it — and because the dogs bit off its feathers, the place was named "Hakui" (羽咋, "feather-biting"). In 1917 the Imperial Household Agency designated Ōtsuka as the tomb of Iwatsukuwake no Mikoto.

Cosmo Isle Hakui (コスモアイル羽咋), a public space science museum, displays real spacecraft and equipment described as having flown in space and returned to Earth. A placard beside its Vostok return capsule, from the former Soviet Union, states it "actually went to space." A full-scale Mercury capsule, made of the same material as the original, and an Apollo command module are also on view. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.

Mikohara rice (神子原米) became known after being presented to the Vatican in 2005. In summer, ama divers harvest natural rock oysters by hand at Shibagaki Fishing Port (柴垣漁港). The Chirihama Nagisa Driveway (千里浜なぎさドライブウェイ), where cars can drive along the beach, is often closed to traffic on days of high waves. Keta Taisha (気多大社), once the Ichinomiya (一宮) of old Noto Province, also stands in the city.
