01 / The place names Hitoto and Hanamizuki

The place names Hitoto and Hanamizukiare said to be the source of two sisters' surname.

In what is now Nakanoto, the old town of Toriya held the place names Hitoto (一青) and Hanamizuki (花見月). Singer Hitoto Yo (一青窈) and her sister, tourism ambassador Hitoto Tae (一青妙), trace the surname Hitoto to Toriya, as Tae has written on her own blog. In 2015, JR West changed the arrival melody at seven Nanao Line stations to Yo's best-known song, "Hanamizuki."

  • "Hitotoshō": a place name recorded since the late Heian period
  • 2016: Hitoto Tae appointed Nakanoto tourism ambassador
  • April 2015: "Hanamizuki" became the arrival melody at 7 Nanao Line stations

Fudo Falls (不動滝) is said to have been opened about 1,300 years ago by the monk Taichō, who also opened Mt. Hakusan. A statue of Fudo Myōō beside the pool gave the falls their name; they were once called Kumano Falls. The falls are about 20m high. Every July 5, a falls-opening rite is held, said to help with eye trouble and headaches.

03 / Mt. Sekido

Mt. Sekido's mountain-opening riteis held on July 7, said to be Taicho's death anniversary.

Mt. Sekido (石動山) is said to have been opened in the Nara period by the monk Taichō. At its height in the medieval era, it held more than 360 temple halls and about 3,000 monks, tradition says. July 7, believed to be Taichō's death anniversary, brings a memorial rite; in 2025, about 100 parishioners again gathered to pray for the mountain's safety. Many visitors take home water from the pond on the grounds.
