The town says that Shiba Magosaburo Akinao, the last head of the Shiba clan, composed a poem, "From today I shall call it Shiwa, for the waves breaking on the stones of this river look purple," and that this gave the town its name. The town tourism exchange association says the sacred red stone named in the shrine's tradition was raised from the Kitakami River and is now enshrined in the grounds of Shigariwake Shrine.

The main house, completed in 1921 by Hirai Rokuemon, the 12th head, is a modern Japanese-style building with many glass windows, and its brick wall also survives.
