01 / Toyotamahime Shrine Water Karakuri

Staged at Toyotamahime Shrine in Chiran every July 9 and 10, at the Rokugatsu-to lantern festival. The city tourism site writes that puppets about 30 to 40 cm tall move through wooden gears and levers powered by a water wheel. It is an event from the Edo period; interrupted by war and other causes, it was revived in 1979.

02 / Chiran Castle Ruins

A medieval mountain castle in Nagasato, Chiran, designated a national Historic Site in 1993. The Agency for Cultural Affairs writes that the northern group is divided by steep Shirasu cliffs into four independent enclosures: Honmaru, Kuranojo, Imajo and Yubajo. It was the seat of the Shimazu clan's Sata branch, and the lord's residence stood at the foot of the branch castle Kikko-jo.

03 / Shimizu Cliff Buddhas

Located in Iwaya Park, Shimizu, Kawanabe. The prefecture writes, citing a Minamikyushu city pamphlet, that over 200 carvings, including gorinto and hokyointo pagodas, Sanskrit characters and Buddhist images, are cut into a welded-tuff cliff on the right bank of the Shimizu River, about 20 m high and 400 m long. The works date from the late Heian period to the Meiji period.

Eight stations on the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line lie in the city, which was formed in 2007 by merging the three former towns of Ei, Chiran and Kawanabe. In the city's timetable (as of October 1, 2026), all eight Kagoshima Kotsu buses from Kagoshima-Chuo Station take 74 minutes to Buke Yashiki Iriguchi in Chiran.

  1. 01Bandokorobana is a scenic spot on the coast in Ei, where a natural rock reef formed by volcanic activity hundreds of thousands of years ago and later erosion is called the sea pond. The ring-shaped pool in welded tuff was designated a prefectural Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 2019. The city says Ino Tadataka visited on a survey in 1810, and a monument was erected in 1956.
  2. 02Chiran grew up around the lord's residence, which stood at the foot of a branch castle of the national Historic Site Chiran Castle; the Chiran samurai district is a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and its gardens are a national Place of Scenic Beauty. The Satsuma water karakuri is also staged at Takeda Shrine in Minamisatsuma, and the Minami-Satsuma Jugoya rites are a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
  3. 03In Kawanabe, the grounds of Iigura Shrine hold a prefectural Natural Monument camphor tree, and Nozaki has Yaseo Falls, a city Place of Scenic Beauty. In Sebira, Ei, people once leapt across rocks before the road existed, and the road is said to have been completed around 1738.
