01 / Michino Camphor Factory Ruins

Early Showa camphor-making was steamdistillation, as the ruins show.

In Sakurayama-kamicho stand the ruins of a camphor factory that operated in the early Showa era. A furnace, kettles and a cooling tank remain, showing that camphor was extracted by steam distillation. The work needed much water, which came by a stone culvert from a reservoir of about 500 square meters and turned a waterwheel before flowing to the tanks. The city designated the ruins a cultural property in 2021.

02 / Kago Gold Mine and the Oyamatsumi Shrine Mask

The mine's reputed discoverer is recordedas offering a mask he carved at 84.

At Oyamatsumi Shrine in Kanayama-cho, Makurazaki, is a mask recorded as carved and offered in July 1686, at the age of 84, by the man said to have discovered the Kago Gold Mine. Together with a drum donated by 63 people in 1692, it is a city-designated cultural property.

03 / Nanmeikan

The Makurazaki Cultural Center Nanmeikan is a large wooden facility on a low hill in Katahirayama Park. As a town that grew around the fishing industry, its main hall was designed with a ship's anchor as its motif, and the outdoor plaza has wave-shaped benches. It was built with a 1987 Forestry Agency model wooden facility program.

The city's official site says Makurazaki lies at the southern end of the Satsuma Peninsula, facing the East China Sea, in a nearly pentagonal shape. The city is 12 km east to west and 10 km north to south, with mountains running east and west from Mt. Kurata in the north, a central plain along the Kadowatari River basin, and a coastline centered on Makurazaki Port. The gateway is Makurazaki Station on the JR Ibusuki-Makurazaki Line.
