The prefectural board of education describes the Tokara Pony as a small chestnut horse 110-120 cm tall, designated a prefectural Natural Monument on September 7, 1953. Down to 32 horses in 1960, it was dispersed around the prefecture, and is still kept on Nakanoshima today.

02 / Boze of Akusekijima

On the last day of Obon, at dusk, Bozein masks of red clay and ink drive off evil.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs explains that on the 16th of the seventh lunar month, Akusekijima's Boze appear at dusk and drive off people's evil spirits. Three young men wear masks daubed with red clay and ink, with biro palm leaves wrapped on their bodies. It is a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property; the photo is a museum display.

Takarajima's breast-shaped Megamiyama figuresin one theory of the name Tokara.

The village website cites a theory that the name Tokara comes from the Ainu word "tokapu", linked to the breast-shaped Megamiyama on Takarajima, and says nothing is decisive. The mountain has long been revered, and is still said to be a mountain one must not enter.

Toshima has no airport; the islands are reached by the village-run Ferry Toshima 2. It leaves Kagoshima Port and calls at each island from Kuchinoshima to Takarajima, as a rule twice a week, on days set by a monthly schedule. The village office is in Kagoshima, with a branch on Nakanoshima.
