01 / Otter of the Shinjo River (新荘川のカワウソ)

After being last confirmed on the Shinjo Riverin 1979, none has been sighted in Japan.

In 1974, a Japanese otter was confirmed living on the Shinjo River. The city writes that there has been no sighting in Japan since the one confirmed in 1979. With this otter, the last confirmed living on the Shinjo River, as its symbol, the city works toward an environmentally friendly town.

02 / Otonashi Shrine (鳴無神社)

The shrine buildings date from 1663 (Kanbun 3),in the line of Toshogu-style architecture.

It stands at the head of an inlet on the Yokonami Peninsula, in the Otonashi district, and its founding is said to date from AD 460. The main hall, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, is a three-bay kasuga-zukuri building, and the city introduces the celestial maidens painted on its ceiling. The tourism association writes that the approach road leading toward the sea can also be seen from the cruise boat.

03 / Otani Camphor Tree (大谷のクス)

Inside the hollow of the main trunk,the camphor deity is enshrined.

The camphor tree stands in the precincts of Suga Shrine in the Otani district and was designated a national Natural Monument in 1924 (Taisho 13). The main trunk is hollow, and the camphor deity (楠神様) is enshrined inside. It is said that even the sickly become healthy, and many people visit to pray for the growth of infants.

  1. 01The municipal cruise boat (junkosen) carries pupils commuting to school through Uranouchi Bay, and the general public can ride too. The run from Umetate (埋立) to Bannai (坂内) is 17.3 km and takes about an hour, and there is no service on Sundays, holidays, or over the New Year.
  2. 02The Shinjo River is where the Japanese otter was last confirmed, in 1979; since then, the city writes, none has been sighted in Japan. Otonashi Shrine's main hall, at the head of an inlet on the Yokonami Peninsula, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and the Otani camphor tree is a national Natural Monument.
