Upstream on the Taki River (滝川) near Kawahara Elementary School, the water drops about 20m and looks like a white thread, the prefecture writes. The falls' other name (寄姫の滝) is said to come from the legend of a beautiful woman (寄姫) who appeared before a man sheltering from the rain. It is on Kumamoto's Heisei 100 Famous Waters list.

02 / Kumamoto Nishihara-go Dictionary

People who left the villagecompiled its words into a dictionary.

The Kanto Nishihara Association (関東にしはら会), made up of people living in Tokyo, compiled a dictionary under the name 'Nishihara-go' (西原語), holding that local languages deserve the leading role too. The village says the second edition was released in March 2025 (Reiwa 7). It draws about 1,300 words from a Higo-dialect dictionary and adds roughly 100 that appear to be unique to Nishihara.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs designates the area outside the outer rim's ridgeline (west side), including the Tawarayama (俵山) district, as the Important Cultural Landscape 'Grassland Landscape of the Western Aso Outer Rim.' It notes that being next to Kumamoto's urban area has left traces of land clearing and commercial crop production.
