The city's tourism site writes that Matsuai suffered four great fires in the five years from Bunsei 9 (1826). To relieve the victims and prevent fires, the village headman (庄屋, shoya) spread dozo (storehouse-style) houses with white plastered walls. The "fire-break paths" (火除け道, hiyoke-michi), made by spacing houses apart, also served as protection against disaster.
