On the upper slopes of Mt. Takayama (532 m), north of Susa Bay, boulders of quartz gabbro are exposed, with a strong magnetism like that of natural magnets. The nearer a boulder is to the summit, the stronger its magnetism, and it weakens with distance. It is rare for a rock that is not magnetite to be this magnetic, and it was designated a National Natural Monument in 1936.

After the Meiji Restoration, to help impoverished samurai, the Hagi retainer Obata Takamasa turned samurai-house land in the Heankoji district into natsumikan (summer orange) groves. Horiuchi, sandy and well drained, became the best site, and its heavy earthen walls, left standing in the samurai quarter, served to protect the wind-sensitive trees. The natsumikan is also the city's designated fruit.

In 1856 the Hagi domain built a shipyard at Ebisugahana, and the Heishin Maru (丙辰丸, 25 m long) was launched that year. Old documents confirm that iron smelted at Oitayama in Fukue was used for its ship nails and other parts. The iron sand came by Kitamae-bune trading ships from Hamada in Shimane to Nago Port in Abu.

Hagi keeps the former Hagi Domain Boathouse (旧萩藩御船倉) in Hamasaki, where the lord's boats were kept, and the streets of Sasanamiichi (佐々並市), a post town on the Hagi Okan road. Mishima, offshore, is 70 minutes by high-speed boat from Hagi Port, and on the island of Utsu a Kannon hall stands on a rock jutting into the sea. Ebisugahana Shipyard is one of the component sites of the World Heritage "Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution" (registered in 2015).

Hagi City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Tsurue ferry in Hagi is a hand-rowed wooden boat, run by the city, that crosses about 80 m of the Matsumoto River between Hamasaki and Tsurue. It is a municipal road (Hamasaki-Tsurue Line), In the domain era there were several other ferries too, and this is the only one that remains as it was.
  2. 02On the summit of Mt. Takayama in Susa are boulders with a strong magnetism like natural magnets. The natsumikan groves began in Horiuchi and Heankoji after the Meiji Restoration, to help the samurai.
  3. 03Old documents confirm that iron from Oitayama was used for the Western-style ship Heishin Maru, launched at Ebisugahana Shipyard. Hagi also has the Hagi Domain Boathouse in Hamasaki, the post town of Sasanamiichi, and the island of Mishima offshore.
