Living here

30 km from Fukuoka City, 35 km from Kitakyushu City.

  • about 100,000 people

The city lies between Kitakyushu and Fukuoka, ringed by mountains on all sides but the north, with islands such as Oshima, Jinoshima and Okinoshima in the Genkai Sea. The JR Kagoshima Main Line and National Route 3 link it to both cities; housing estates moved in, the population grew, and it has held steady since.

Munakata City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Tsujiido (辻井戸) were shared wells, seven of them dug in Akama-shuku (赤間宿), a post town on the Karatsu Kaido, and they quenched the thirst of the people passing through. Akama-shuku was laid out around 1603 (Keicho 8) by Kuroda Nagamasa, lord of the Fukuoka domain, and is about 500 m long. Tsujiido and narrow-fronted townhouses still stand along the old road.
  2. 02The World Heritage site "Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region" has seven component properties in the city, including Nakatsu-miya and the Okitsu-miya Yohaisho on Oshima, and Okinoshima. Kanezaki (鐘崎) is called the "birthplace of ama divers along the Sea of Japan coast," and the ama diving gear is a prefecturally designated tangible folk cultural property. Sakurakyo Kofun (桜京古墳), a tomb with decorated stone chamber walls, is a national historic site.
  3. 03A town on the Genkai Sea in northern Fukuoka Prefecture, between Fukuoka and Kitakyushu, with Oshima, Jinoshima and Okinoshima lying offshore.
