01 / Inunaki Gobekkan (犬鳴御別館)

A refuge castle to hide the lord in an emergencywas built in the steep Inunaki valley.

Built in the late Edo period as a refuge castle in which to hide the domain lord in an emergency. Katō Shisho of the Fukuoka Domain recommended the Inunaki valley. The remains of the main gate and rear gate, a high stone wall and a garden pond survive. It is not open to the public; visits are through the Miyawaka City Tourist Guide Association.

02 / Paintings of the Thirty-six Poetic Immortals at Wakamiya Hachimangū (三十六歌仙絵)

Paintings kept in the town office safeproved to be by Iwasa Matabei.

Kept from 1960 in the safe of the then Wakamiya town office, they were shown for the first time at the 800th anniversary of the shrine's enshrinement in 1985. A person struck by the style asked for an examination, and they were found to be by Iwasa Matabei Katsumochi. The originals are on deposit at the Fukuoka City Museum of Art.

03 / Nekozuka and the Legend of the Cat That Drove Out Evil (追い出し猫)

A legend of cats that killed a great rat in a templelives on in the name “Nekozuka (猫塚)”.

At Saifukuji (西福寺), where a cat-loving priest lived, cats are said to have gathered and killed a great rat, and the priest held rites for their bodies. The place name Nekozuka remains, and a Nekozuka Park and a cat-shaped bus stop have been built.

Miyawaka lies roughly midway between Fukuoka City and Kitakyushu City, with the Sangun mountains, designated as Dazaifu Prefectural Natural Park, running from west to south. It was founded on February 11, 2006, when the towns of Miyata and Wakamiya merged. JR Kyushu Bus runs to the city hall from Hakata Station and Nogata Station.

  1. 01Takehara Kofun in Takehara, Miyawaka, is a round tomb built in the latter half of the 6th century, a decorated tomb (装飾古墳) whose stone chamber bears red and black paintings, and a national Historic Site. In 1956, when soil was taken for a nearby sumo ring, the tomb's entrance is recorded to have opened.
  2. 02Inunaki Gobekkan in the Inunaki valley was built in the late Edo period as a refuge castle to hide the domain lord in an emergency. The paintings of the Thirty-six Poetic Immortals that belonged to Wakamiya Hachimangū were found in 1985 to be by Iwasa Matabei and are now on deposit at the Fukuoka City Museum of Art.
  3. 03In Yamaguchi, the legend of cats that killed a great rat is told at Nekozuka. The city's coal museum exhibits Alco Locomotive No. 22 used by the Kaijima coal mine, and the Kobe Harbor votive painting at Hiyoshi Shrine, the Heihachigatsu Festival's Mannengan dance and the Shinkōsai festival of Wakamiya Hachimangū are also designated by the city or prefecture.
