01 / The Water Gate of Kakenouma Kōgoishi (鹿毛馬神籠石)

Under the rampart closing the valley mouth,two drainage culverts were built.

The valley mouth was closed with an earthen rampart about 60 m long and 9 m wide, and drainage culverts (underground channels) were built beneath it. Both culverts measure about 18 m in total length. Posts were found inside the rampart at intervals of about 3 m; they may also have stood above it as a fence.

02 / Former Garden of Ito Den'emon (旧伊藤傳右エ門氏庭園)

The garden of the main residence built by the coal-mine operator Ito Den'emon (伊藤傳右エ門) is a national Place of Scenic Beauty. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that it was completed around his marriage to Yanagiwara Akiko (柳原燁子, Byakuren). It has a large artificial hill and a pond with stone fountains of distinctive design, and can be viewed from the main room and strolled around.

03 / Stone Reaping Knives of the Tateiwa Site (立岩遺跡)

From stone at a mountain foot about 5 kmnorthwest of the site, rice-harvest tools were made.

Stone reaping-knife (sekihōchō, 石庖丁) production at the Tateiwa Site began at the end of the early Yayoi period and peaked in the latter half of the middle Yayoi period. The stone came from the foot of Mt. Kasagiyama (笠置山), about 5 km northwest of the site, and is a diabase tuff of a pale azuki-bean red. The city's pamphlet records that knives of the "Tateiwa brand" spread across northern Kyushu, centered on the Fukuoka, Saga and Asakura areas.

Iizuka lies near the middle of Fukuoka Prefecture, with the Onga River plain to the north and south, Mt. Sekinoyama (関の山) to the east and the Sangun Mountains to the west. The city describes it as within commuting distance of both Fukuoka and Kitakyushu, the two designated cities. It is also a place that the ancient Dazaifu official road and the Edo-period Nagasaki Road passed through.

The finds from the Hotta jar-burial group at the Tateiwa Site are National Important Cultural Properties, kept at the Iizuka City Museum of History.
  3. 03Kaho Theater is a two-story wooden playhouse that opened in 1931 (Showa 6), a nationally registered tangible cultural property. The city also has Uchino-juku, a post town on the Nagasaki Road, and the Chikuho Coalfield Sites (Shakano Coal Mine ruins), a national Historic Site.
