At the western edge of Kyushu University's Fukuoka Research Forest, about 17 hectares of woodland around Kamata Pond (蒲田池) are developed and managed jointly by the university and Sasaguri. At the 2010 opening, the university called opening research-forest woodland "the first attempt of its kind in Japan." The bald cypresses at the pond's edge send knee roots above the water.

02 / Sasaguri Shikoku Pilgrimage (篠栗四国八十八ヶ所霊場)

Sand brought back from the original Shikokuis said to have been laid in the village's sacred sites.

The nun Jinin proposed making 88 pilgrimage sites and died before it was done. Fujiki Tosuke of Sasaguri village carried on her aim, and the sand he brought back from a pilgrimage of the original Shikoku route, laid at 88 sacred sites in the village, is handed down as the beginning. The town describes it as having "a history of 180 years."

03 / Cedars of Mt. Wakasugi

A cedar whose trunk splits into fivewas found by DNA analysis to be one individual.

Yamato no Osugi (大和の大杉), on Mt. Wakasugi, has a trunk girth of 16.15 m and was confirmed in Heisei 12 (2000) after local information. It looks like five trunks, but DNA analysis showed one multi-stemmed individual. The Forestry Agency protects 3.74 ha on the mountain's mid-slope as a forest of cedars 200 years old or more.

  1. 01Sasaguri Kyudai Forest (篠栗九大の森) is a woodland of about 17 hectares, part of Kyushu University's Fukuoka Research Forest, opened to the public and developed and managed jointly by the university and Sasaguri. Bald cypresses stand at the edge of Kamata Pond in its center, and send up aerial roots, introduced as working like a diver's snorkel, above the water like knees.
  2. 02Stops on the Sasaguri Shikoku Pilgrimage dot the town, and Mt. Wakasugi has a Forestry Agency protected forest and scenic forest. The name Wakasugi is said to come from cedar branches divided from the Ayasugi of Kashii Shrine (香椎宮) and planted there. At the foot of the mountain, at the lower shrine of Taiso Shrine (太祖神社), Taiso Kagura (太祖神楽), a prefectural intangible folk cultural property, is performed every April and October.
  3. 03About 12 km east of central Fukuoka, the town is about 70% forest, with the Tatara River through its center. It also has Gotonotaki Falls (五塔ノ滝), the Komenoyama Observatory (米ノ山展望台) and the Wakasugi Rakuen campsite (若杉楽園キャンプ場).
